Levy and co-authors analyze the slant (the political leaning) of news articles. Previous studies have measured the slant of news outlets.
However, today individuals are exposed to many articles from various sources through social media. Therefore, to analyze whether one consumes liberal or conservative news, it is no longer sufficient to analyze the outlets they visit. Until recently, measuring the slant of specific articles was technically too challenging. Levy et al. will leverage large data, recent advances in large language models, and the expert classification of a subset of articles to predict the slant of millions of articles.
With these predictions, they aim to explore questions related to the demand and supply of news slant, including whether people reside in social media echo chambers.
